I created this guide to help you decide on a gluten-free diet to help you eat the food of your choice while maintaining health and lifestyle.
I believe, starting a gluten-free diet may seem daunting at first, but by slowly transitioning into this lifestyle one step at a time, you will eventually get used to it. I also felt daunted at first but over time I felt like, I should shift myself to this lifestyle and enjoy the gluten-free lifestyle.
For this reason, I always say, it is important to understand which foods are naturally gluten-free and create a meal plan that fits your needs and taste buds.
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks gluten, a type of protein found in wheat and some other grains. Following a gluten-free diet is the only way to control symptoms and prevent further damage to the small intestine.
It involves eliminating all foods containing gluten, such as bread, pasta, cereal, baked goods, and many processed food items. Eating gluten-free requires careful label reading (Read my guide) and meal planning (read the guide here). It also means learning to identify potential sources of hidden gluten that aren’t obvious from food labels or ingredient lists alone.
Fortunately, there are now more options than ever for people with celiac disease to enjoy a balanced, gluten-free diet.
Gluten-Free Diet Awareness Month
Gluten-Free Diet Awareness Month is an annual event held every October. The month-long event is dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of following a strict gluten-free diet for people with celiac disease and other medical conditions where gluten must be avoided.
During this month, individuals are encouraged to educate themselves about the basics of living a healthy and nutritious gluten-free lifestyle. Events also include product tastings, seminars on selecting safe ingredients for cooking and baking, educational materials about living gluten-free, and food retailers offering special discounts on products that meet these dietary needs.
With more than three million Americans diagnosed with celiac disease nationwide, Gluten-Free Diet Awareness Month is a great opportunity to spread the word about proper dietary guidelines.
Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Low FODMAP Diet
The gluten-free dairy-free low FODMAP diet is an emerging new way of eating for individuals with digestive issues, food sensitivity, or Celiac Disease. The acronym “FODMAP” stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols which are short-chain carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine.
This type of diet eliminates all foods containing gluten as well as those high in FODMAPs such as certain fruits, vegetables, grains, and dairy products. By following this diet, individuals can reduce their symptoms of bloating, abdominal discomfort, and uncomfortable digestive issues.
Gluten-Free Liquid Diet
A gluten-free liquid diet is a diet where all foods are in liquid form or can be blended into a smoothie or shake. This type of diet is designed to provide adequate nutrition while removing any potential sources of gluten from the diet.
People with celiac disease may be advised to follow this type of diet for short periods of time before transitioning to a more sustainable lifestyle that follows a strict gluten-free diet plan. The most important part of following this type of diet is making sure you get enough protein and other essential nutrients including vitamins, minerals, fiber, and healthy fats.
This can be done by incorporating nutrient-rich ingredients such as nut butter, coconut milk, leafy greens, and protein powder into your liquid meals. Additionally, it is important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
By following a gluten-free diet plan and participating in Gluten-Free Diet Awareness Month, those with celiac disease can enjoy better health while still maintaining an enjoyable diet. Whether you choose to follow a gluten-free dairy-free low FODMAP diet or opt for a gluten-free liquid diet option, there are many ways to ensure that any dietary restrictions don’t limit your nutrition intake.
With proper education and planning, people with celiac disease can lead happy healthy lives while enjoying delicious meals without the worry of suffering from unpleasant symptoms.
